Maike Gräf’s sculptures are carved from wood in a classical style. Formally, they evoke comic strips, manga, and graffiti. They draw simultaneously from the legacy of Cubism and Expressionism, translating the old-master ideal of The Figura Serpentinata into the present day. Through her exploration of the timeless themes of life, love, and death, Maike Gräf addresses fundamental questions of our existence and transforms the familiar into something excitingly new. In her latest series of works, the artist reinterprets classic works from art history and blends them with the visual language of street art and pop art.
