A. Göhringer, one of the leading German wood sculptors, began with drawings and painting. The first wood sculptures were created in the mid-80s. They are steles, initially massive, and become more and more fragile over time. In 1990 he developed his ‘cross-layering’ – the block of wood is provided with a uniform grid of intersecting lines, creating a structure of lattice-shaped openings and breakthroughs. The artist works exclusively on the wood with chainsaws, giving formal expression to the pressure and tensile forces in the log. He is concerned with the exploration of extremes, complementary forces and structures.
