Gabriel Godard, born April 28, 1933 in Delouze-Rosières (Meuse) and died December 4, 2023 in Ancenis-Saint-Géréon, was a French painter (figurative then abstract).
Gabriel Godard began painting as a self-taught artist in 1950.
From 1986 onwards, he turned away from figurative painting in favor of abstraction, seeing the subject as a mere pretext for a more ambitious composition. His abstract painting is then characterized by a subtle framing between light and form, creating a deep rhythm with a strong, contrasting palette.
Gabriel Godard has received numerous awards and was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1977.
A few days later, the story of Oradour reached us. I was 11 at the time. The emotion never left me. - Gabriel Godard in Ouest-France, October 6, 2016.
His works were well received in his early years as a painter, and several French museums acquired his work, including the Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Modernes in Paris.
Gabriel Godard died in Ancenis-Saint-Géréon on December 4, 2023, aged 90.
